2022, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsMechanisms of endocannabinoid control of synaptic plasticity
2021, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :In this regard, ketamine (a known modifier of synaptic plasticity; Luo et al., 2020; Maren et al., 1991; Salami et al., 2000; Stringer and Guyenet, 1983), was shown to increase 2-AG levels in the dorsal striatum by increasing the expression of PR domain protein 5 (PRDM5), which functions as a transcriptional repressor of MAGL (Xu et al., 2020). Similarly, a link between presynaptic BDNF signalling, reduced MAGL expression but increased CB1R expression in cultured cerebellar granule neurons has been reported (Maison et al., 2009). Although as previously stated, the interaction between BDNF and eCB signalling is complex, since BDNF also acts at postsynaptic sites to facilitate or inhibit eCB-plasticity (see section 4.1.1).
Resilience to fear: The role of individual factors in amygdala response to stressors
2021, Molecular and Cellular NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Interestingly, BDNF is strongly interconnected with the eCB system. Activation of the post-synaptic BDNF receptor (TrKB) leads to the release of eCBs, to an increase in transcription and translation of CB1R and higher CB1R responses to agonists (Andero and Ressler, 2012; Maison et al., 2009). In turn, activation of CB1R can modulate the expression of several downstream genes, including BDNF.
The therapeutic role of cannabinoid receptors and its agonists or antagonists in Parkinson's disease
2020, Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological PsychiatryCitation Excerpt :A recent finding demonstrated that the induction of BDNF gene expression mediated by CB1 receptors relies on the activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1(mTORC1) pathway (Blazquez et al., 2015). Taken phosphorylated Akt as the indicator, BDNF was also shown to promote a stable increase in neuronal sensitivity to ECS (Maison et al., 2009). In addition, neurogenesis mediated by stimulation of CB1 receptors also can be improved through antagonizing the neurotoxicity effect of NO (Kim et al., 2006b).
Levetiracetam combined with ACEA, highly selective cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist changes neurogenesis in mouse brain
2019, Neuroscience LettersCitation Excerpt :Neurotrophic factors are highly linked to adult neurogenesis and latest sources imply a functional interplay between BDNF and CB1 receptors in the brain [68]. To back up this statement Maison et al. [69] proved that BDNF increases the expression of CB1 receptors in rat cultured cerebellar granule neurons, while BDNF promotes the production of cortical endocannabinoids [70]. Additionally, up to date evidence reveal that cannabinoids can target the actin-bundling protein fascin, which are important in the migration of neuroblasts and neural development [71].
