The third wave: Intermediate filaments in the maturing nervous system
2017, Molecular and Cellular NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :In the rat, expression of both NF and peripherin in sympathetic ganglia is observed from E11.5 onwards, along with autonomic fibres and axons in the gut wall (Cochard and Paulin, 1984; Escurat et al., 1990). NFL is present from E11 onwards in rat peripheral nerves and ganglia (Carden et al., 1987; Gorham et al., 1990; Escurat et al., 1990). The presence of peripherin in somatic motor efferents and sensory afferents is discussed in the CNS sections above.
α-Internexin and Peripherin: Expression, Assembly, Functions, and Roles in Disease
2016, Methods in EnzymologyCitation Excerpt :Peripherin has been suggested to play an important role in some aspects of neurite growth and stability. This role is supported by the findings that expression of peripherin emerges early in neurite outgrowth during development (Escurat et al., 1990; Gorham et al., 1990; Troy, Brown, Greene, & Shelanski, 1990; Undamatla & Szaro, 2001), and that elevated peripherin expression has been found in PNS and CNS neurons after injury (Beaulieu, Kriz, & Julien, 2002; Oblinger, Wong, & Parysek, 1989; Troy, Muma, Greene, Price, & Shelanski, 1990; Wong & Oblinger, 1990). A study using antisense oligonucleotides in cultured PC12 cells suggested that peripherin is necessary for the stability of processes, but not neurite formation (Troy, Greene, & Shelanski, 1992).

2009, Journal of Biological ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Induction of DCX mRNA or protein by RA in neuroblastoma cells has not been previously reported. Expression of the neuronal type III intermediate filament protein peripherin is also activated during neuronal differentiation (57). Cui et al. (43) studied the time course of increase of peripherin protein in BE(2)C cells during RA treatment.
